RGS honors Alice Sandahl and Mercedes Klein as former staff and key contributors of the community created at the Kirkland Teen Union Building (KTUB). The KTUB served as a hub for alternative arts, music, and queerness for the eastside youth for a number of years. Alice and Mercedes were crucial to the KTUB’s awesomeness between 2007-2011!
TEAM PHILOSOPHY: glitter and high fives
Alice and Mercedes share a passion for cheesy (or amazing!) pop music (they might be obsessed with Justin Timberlake), glitter, and impromptu dance parties. In her next life, Alice dreams of being a burlesque dancer and lounge pianist, while Mercedes hopes to reincarnate as a hip hop star and b-girl.
ATHLETIC HISTORY
Mercedes’ athletic history began in first grade with a soccer ball being kicked in her face on her very first day of practice and ended with an unfulfilled longing to rock her high school’s cheerleading uniform. She did, however, manage to spend some mad time on the court with her middle school basketball team: The Shooting Rainbows?! No joke. The team came up with the name themselves!
Alice’s life as an athlete includes failing to make any of the teams she tried out for but earning some badass points for sporting a black eye (from P.E. class) in her cheerleading photo. Wait, she did have surprising success as a shot and discuss thrower on her 7th grade track and field team!
WHY YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH US
What Mercedes and Alice lack in sportiness, they make up for in cheer! They have experience working in youth development at the Kirkland Teen Union Building, making them two huge dorky kids at heart. If you play on their team, “[you]’ll be young for-ever!”
They’re super excited to have the chance to support such an awesome project and in such a fun way. Come play with them!
